Students Federation of India (SFI) activists staged a protest sit-in inside the chamber of the office of the Pro Vice Chancellor (PVC) of Kannur University on Saturday, demanding cancellation of an examination.

According to university authorities, the protesting SFI workers damaged a door of the office of the PVC, T. Asokan, on the university’s Thavakkara campus here on Saturday morning. The protesters demanded that the fourth semester examination of B.Sc Mathematics paper “Elements of Mathematics” be cancelled as the question paper was a repetition of the one given last year. The university authorities decided to cancel the examination on a complaint by the protesters. The students laid siege to the office of the PVC for nearly an hour.

When contacted, Dr. Asokan said that the protesters had damaged the door. The university lodged a complaint with the police over the destruction of public property. He said that a committee headed by a Syndicate member was constituted to inquire into the allegation of repetition of the question paper. The committee would submit its report in 10 days, he said.

External instituitions

According to university authorities, question papers were set by external institutions. Prepared question papers were directly sent to the security press for printing, they said, adding that the university’s offices could in no way see the prepared question papers.
