The Koduvally police on Thursday booked Jawahar Munawar, an assistant professor attached to the Farook Training College, on the charge of making sexually coloured remarks about women. The case was registered under Sections 354 A (IV) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code on the basis of a complaint filed by a third year degree student of Farook College.

The police said the controversial speech was made by the accused at Vattoli, near Narikkuni, in the Koduvally police station limits. The case would be investigated by circle inspector A. Chandramohan.

Hearing extended

Meanwhile, the panel set up by the college management to inquire into the recent clash between students and teachers on the campus decided to extend its hearing in the wake of more students coming out in the open to present their case.

K.M. Naseer, associate professor, department of Malayalam, who is heading the nine-member panel, told The Hindu that 16 students had deposed before them on Thursday. The second year degree students claimed that they were celebrating “Holi” by throwing colour powder on each other to mark the culmination of their exam schedule. When they tried to go out of the campus through the back gate, they were confronted by local residents. When they attempted to approach the front gate, they were chased by a group of college employees, both teachers and non-teaching staff, and beaten up. The students forwarded to the panel video clippings of college employees roughing them up.

Mr. Naseer said that 20 students had so far given their accounts. They would also record the statements of teachers and non-teaching staff before submitting the final report, he added.

Meanwhile, the Farook College unit of the All Kerala Private Teachers’ Association condemned the face-off between students and teachers on March 15.
