The District Child Protection Unit and the Juvenile Justice Board jointly organised a workshop for the police sub-inspectors in the district at Government Observation Home, Tavanur, on Wednesday.
The training programme was held against a backdrop of 143 existing cases before the Juvenile Justice Board in connection with the offences committed by children in the district.
Juvenile Justice Board principal magistrate and chief judicial magistrate Jayakumar John inaugurated the workshop.
District Child Protection Officer Sameer Machingal presented the subject.
Challenges
Juvenile Justice Board member K.P. Shaji spoke on the challenges facing juvenile justice in the country. Board member K.A. Rugmini spoke on children in conflict with the law.
The workshop exhorted the police officers to strengthen the juvenile justice system in the country.
It also asked them to apply extreme care when handling children who come in conflict with the law.
It asked the police to protect the rights of the children, and to settle cases involving children without delay.
The workshop also called upon the police to intervene effectively to prevent children from using motorcycles without licence.
35 police stations
Sub-inspectors and assistant sub-inspectors from 35 police stations in the district attended the workshop.
Assistant public prosecutor Aneesh, Children’s Home superintendent Askar Shah, District Child Protection Unit officers Mohammed Fazal and Sali, Legal Officer Yasir, and Children’s Home Care Provider Jabir Kakkidippuram spoke.
