A debate triggered by former State Police Chief T.P. Senkumar on issues concerning the minority communities and the overtures made by certain BJP leaders towards him have set the ground for intense speculation that he will make a political debut soon.
Mr. Senkumar drew flak from the CPI(M) as well as a host of other organisations, including the Muslim Youth League, for his observation that 42 in every 100 child births in the State belonged to a particular community.
He went on to comment that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh could not be equated with the Islamic State and also made references to love jihad at a function hosted by the BJP organ Janmabhumi here, lending substance to the debate.
He appeared to echo the stated position of the RSS and the BJP, giving rise to speculation that he might be drifting towards the BJP.
His critics said it could even be deemed as his considered opinion that had influenced his decisions while being the State Police Chief. They also demanded the government to register a case against him.
The BJP is also trying to reap political mileage from the development and State general secretary M.T. Ramesh called on Mr. Senkumar on Monday.
State president Kummanam Rajasekharan went a step ahead and said anyone accepting the party line could become part of it and the entry of a person of Mr. Senkumar’s stature would only strengthen the organisation.
BJP sources told The Hindu that the party had not taken any decision or delegated anyone to talk to Mr. Senkumar.
