The Department of Sanskrit, Calicut University, is organising a three-day national seminar on Perspectivising Bhasa: Traditions and Interpretations from June 21 in collaboration with Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi.
Explaining the relevance of the event, C. Rajendran of the Sanskrit department said on Monday: “The 13 plays ascribed to Bhasa were discovered by T. Ganapati Sastri a century ago, attracting international attention. The plays revealed a hitherto unimagined facet of Sanskrit literature. In his well-knit plays, Bhasa had dramatised the most memorable episodes of the epics, the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, besides some stories of perennial human interest. Bhasa's plays have tremendous stage appeal and many of them have been presented on Kerala's Koodiyattam theatre. Most of them have been rendered into English and other foreign languages and staged in India and abroad.”
The seminar would explore the vibrant aspects of Bhasa's universe, Prof. Rajendran said. It would be inaugurated by veteran Sanskrit scholar P. Sri Ramachandadu at the Seminar Complex on the campus.
About 20 scholars, including Kamalesh Dutt Tripathi, M. Narasimhachary, Dipti Tripathi, Harekrishna Sathapathy, Sudha Gopalakrishnan, N.P. Unni, K.G. Poulose, N.V.P. Unnithiri, K.N.N. Elayath, and M.V. Narayanan, would present papers, he added.
