Ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) and Congress candidate R. Selvaraj filed his nomination papers for the June 2 Neyyattinkara by-election on Friday.

He was accompanied to the office of the returning officer by Health Minister V.S. Sivakumar and Congress leaders M.M. Hassan and Thampanoor Ravi.

Mr. Selvaraj, whose resignation as the legislator representing the Communist Party of India (Marxist), had necessitated the by-election, exuded confidence in the poll outcome when he talked to the media after filing his papers.

He said he was touched by the response he was receiving from the voters of Neyyattinkara during the ongoing election campaign.
