SEC inquiry into pastoral letter

July 29, 2010 06:33 pm | Updated 06:33 pm IST - KOCHI:

Ernakulam Collector M. Beena will inquire into a complaint received by the State Election Commission (SEC) regarding a pastoral letter read out during Sunday mass in Catholic churches across the State on July 18.

Sources in the district administration said the complaint was forwarded to the Collector on Thursday and the nature of the complaint was being studied.

One of the appeals to the faithful in the letter was to vote for God-fearing persons in the coming elections to local bodies.

A spokesman for the Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council, apex body of the Catholic Church in the State, said the council had not received any official intimation regarding the complaint or the inquiry. He said the KCBC faced a similar inquiry by the Election Commission in the run-up to the last Lok Sabha elections.
