With the fish market in the town inviting the wrath of many for causing ecological and health hazards, municipal authorities have taken steps to find a location to set up a state-of-the-art fish market.

The municipality, as part of the Vision-2020 programme sponsored by the Union government, has entrusted a subcommittee of the Kanhangad Nagara Vikasana Samithi here with setting up the model fish market.

Sketch submitted

A sketch of the market, developed by architect K. Damodaran, was submitted to the Samithi in the presence of municipal chairperson K. Divya at a function here on Thursday.

The proposed market complex, estimated to cost around Rs.10 crore, energised by solar panels, will have stalls for fish, meat, and dry-fish, besides a parking lot, comfort stations, open garden, cloakroom, cold storage, and draining facilities.

In new locality

The market is envisaged to be set up in a new locality after the municipality ratifies the decision taking into account various aspects relating to the facility, municipal vice chairman Prabhakaran Vazhunnoradi said on Friday.

The existing fish market situated in the congested Kottachery locality has been causing serious health and ecological hazards, as tonnes of waste water from the market is let out on to the nearby road leading to the railway station. The area has emerged as a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
