Sea erosion continues to pose a serious threat along the coastal areas of the district. Several houses have been washed away or seriously damaged in the fierce waves that lash the coast. The problem is acute in areas having no sea walls or where the walls have been destroyed over the years.

About 25 houses at Vandanam in Ambalappuzha north panchayat limits are facing the threat of destruction, said Sanish, a fisherman, a resident of the area.

“The authorities come occasionally and measure out areas, but nothing happens. Our family consists of elders and young women. We are spending days and nights in utmost fear and do not know where to go,” he told The Hindu .

There are many families facing a similar situation along the coast. Several families have been accommodated in temporary shelters.

Quite a few among them have been in the shelters for more than a year or two.

The families facing the threat are offered an amount of ₹10 lakh each, but it has become difficult to buy land and construct a house with that amount, Mr.Sanish said here. It would be difficult for them to vacate the area without proper accommodation.

And, the wait prolongs as the families continue to live amidst threatening roars of waves that come nearer and nearer day after day.
