Sanitation awards announced

District court complex bags district-level prize

The district panchayat on Thursday announced the winners of the award instituted by the District Sanitation Mission for public establishments that maintain a clean environment. The District Court Complex at Kozhikode won the overall district-level award. The award carries a purse of Rs.20,000.

The awards were given under five categories: anganwadis, government schools, government hospitals, government offices and overall district award. The Nadapuram grama panchayat office won the second prize in the overall district award category. It will win a cash prize of Rs.10,000.

The winners were selected after a scrutiny process conducted in five rounds. While preparations for the contest began last October, the scrutiny process began on February 15 with a self-evaluation by the sanitation committee formed at each office. Following this, a three-member team comprising a social worker, a people's representative and a retired government official visited offices to conduct a social audit on February 28.

A team under the Tahsildar visited institutions that scored a cut-off mark in the earlier rounds, on March 20, 23, 24 and 25. In the fourth round, a team designated for the purpose by the District Collector conducted inspections on April 9 and 12. In the last round, an award committee comprising the district panchayat president, District Collector and senior Health, Social Welfare and Sanitation officials decided the winners.

One anganwadi in each block panchayat in the district was selected for the Best Anganwadi award with a Rs. 2,000 cash prize.

The Best School Award was shared by Government Higher Secondary School, Beypore and Government LP School, Cheruvaloor, Perambra. Both schools will get Rs.20,000 each. Government Higher Secondary School, Narikkuni and Government Higher Secondary School, Kuttikattoor came second winning Rs.10,000 each.

The Women and Children Hospital, Kottapramba, and the Vadakara Taluk Hospital won the Best Hospital category award. The prize money is Rs.20,000. The Primary Health Centres at Kunnummal and Maniyoor came second with Rs.10,000 cash prize.

The District Court office in Kozhikode Taluk, Arikkulam grama panchayat office in Koyilandy Taluk and Nadapuram grama panchayat office in Vadakara Taluk won Best Government Office award, each taluk carrying a Rs.10,000 cash prize.

District panchayat president K.P. Kunhammedkutty announced the winners at the Calicut Press Club on Thursday.
