On the eve of Independence Day on Sunday, the country paid tributes to the sacrifices made by four freedom fighters from Kasaragod to free the country from colonial rule.

Union Minister of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Rajiv Pratap Rudy felicitated freedom fighters Karthambu Mesthri, K.R. Kannan and K.V. Narayanan at a public function held at the municipal town hall here on Monday evening.

Prior to this, Mr. Rudy visited the residence of the lone surviving member of the 1931 Guruvayur Satyagraha, K. Madhavan, who turns 103 on August 26.

Mr. Rudy’s visit here was part of a programme to felicitate freedom fighters across the country by 76 Union Ministers. The programme conceived by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was to salute the great services made by the freedom fighters during their young age.

“This is a day to salute the services of freedom fighters such as George Joseph of Travancore, K. Kelappan of South Malabar, Mohammed Abdul Hakeem of Kochi, Kesavadas from Thiruvananthapuram,” he said.

Mr. Rudy listed the initiatives of the Narendra Modi government at the Centre. He said the real strength of India lay in empowering mothers and girl children and the Prime Minister had come out with a clear policy to safeguard their interests.

The Swachch Bharat mission was not just a programme conceived to ensure that the country was clean but it indeed was a philosophy to enhance the image of the nation among the global communities.

Acknowledging the mandate the people of Kerala had given in the recent Assembly elections, he recalled that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had increased its vote share from 4 to 15 per cent in the polls and managed to gain entry into the State Assembly for the first time.
