Minister for Agriculture V. S. Sunil Kumar on Sunday inaugurated the key handing over ceremony of the five finished houses, built by the Kodungalloor-based Craft Hospital & Research Centre for bright girl students from indigent families of Kodungalloor Girls Higher Secondary School.
This was the first phase of the hospital’s project ‘Midukkikkoru Bhavanam.’ Craft Hospital chairman C. Muhammed Ashraf handed over the keys to the students in the presence of Kodungalloor MLA V. R. Sunil Kumar, who presided over the function. E T Tyson, MLA, Kodungalloor Municipal chairman C. Vipinchandran and former MLA, T. N. Prathapan were present.
“The safety of girls is the biggest priority against the backdrop of recent incidents in the State. Providing secure homes to most needy is a welcome step. I hope this great initiative by the Craft Hospital will be an inspiration for others,” said Mr.Sunil Kumar.
The project – ‘Midukkikkoru Bhavanam’ (Home for the smart girl) is aimed at building 100 houses and each year the Hospital plans to build 15 houses. The other 10 houses in this phase are in the process of completion, according to hospital sources. “The objective of this CSR project is to provide safety and security for dedicated girl students who have excellent academic record but come from poor backgrounds,” said Mr. Muhammed Ashraf at the function. The houses are of 500 sq.ft. area constructed at a cost of Rs. 7 lakh. The houses have been registered in the names of the girl students. Till they turn 18, they do not have the right to sell or exchange these houses. The work for the remaining 10 houses is under progress and they will be handed over as soon as it is completed, he added.
Detailed screening
The 15 students were chosen after a detailed screening conducted by a committee comprising the hospital management, PTA members and school authorities, said PTA president P. H. Abdul Rashid. Crafts Hospital General Manager Dr. Joy Innocent gave a detailed report on the project.
