More than two dozen farmers’ organisations, mostly functioning under the aegis of the Catholic Church, sat in a day-long fast here demanding remunerative price for farm products and security for their life and property.
Inaugurating the fast, Bishop Mathew Arackal, head of the Kanjirappally diocese of the Syro Malabar Church and national patron of INFARM, an NGO functioning in the agriculture sector, said that time had come to do away with the arrogance and anti-farmer stance of the leaders of the mainstream political parties. “The farmers have no intention to oppose or defeat anyone. But we are only seeking security for our life and property and remunerative price for the farm products,” he said.
He called upon the farming community to put up a united fight for their demands and pointed out that only organised forces would be able to make gains. A Charter of Rights was declared on the occasion.
