Ruling front backs Mani

November 23, 2014 11:08 am | Updated 11:08 am IST - KOCHI:

A high-power committee of the United Democratic Front (UDF) held here on Saturday adopted a resolution rejecting the allegations of corruption made by bar owners against Finance Minister K.M. Mani.

UDF convener P.P. Thankachan accused the bar owners of raising baseless allegations against Mr. Mani while pointing out that they were engaged in a propaganda against key front leaders, who formulated the government’s liquor policy. Mr. Thankachan rejected reports that the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leadership was unhappy over the Vigilance inquiry against Public Works Secretary T.O. Sooraj, who was suspended from service for amassing wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income.

Terming the Left Democratic Front (LDF) a sinking ship, Mr. Thankachan said the LDF could not even decide on its proposed agitation and mode of inquiry required into the allegations against Mr. Mani.

Mr. Thankachan said the UDF subcommittee on bifurcation of panchayats would meet on December 8 to take a final decision. He said the next high-power committee meeting of the front would be held in Thiruvananthapuram on December 15.
