A private rubber mat exporting unit at Poovanthuruth Industrial Estate near here was destroyed in fire on Sunday.
According to S Hariharan Chettiar, assistant Fire Force Station Officer, Changanassery who led the fire fighting operations, the information was received by 3 pm from, Dolphin Rubber Industries which was engaged in producing export oriented rubber mat. The entire inventories and the building were destroyed in the fire.
The exact magnitude of loss and the cause of fire were yet to be ascertained, he said.
Fire Force units from Changanassery, Thiruvalla, Chengannur, Kottayam and Pampady were pressed into service to bring the fire under control.
Fire Force personnel Manoj, Ibrahim Kutty, Satheesh, Nobin Varghese and others from Changanassery led the fire fighting.
According to Fire Force authorities, a major tragedy was averted as the fire broke out during day time. The industrial estate is dotted by units in close proximity and a KSEB sub station was also near by.
