Rs.5 lakh each for gold medallists in Games

Sports Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan has said the government will provide Rs.5 lakh each as cash prize to sportspersons from the State who win gold medals at the National Games.

Speaking at the medal-presentation ceremony after the conclusion of the rowing competitions in Alappuzha on Thursday, Mr. Radhakrishnan said the cash awards would be provided in addition to the other benefits that were due to the sportspersons. The government would also consider cash awards for silver and bronze medal winners.

Mr. Radhakrishnan expressed happiness at the manner in which the prestigious event was being organised.

K.C. Venugopal, MP, said the presence of competitors from Alappuzha among the list of winners brought joy to the district. He also urged the Minister to take steps to ensure that the Asian Rowing Championship was held in Vembanad Lake.
