To bring tribal land under cultivation

An amount of Rs.7.17 crore was distributed as wages to 9,213 families, mainly of tribal people, in Attappady under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) so far this financial year.

An amount of Rs.4.45 crore was spent as wages in Agali grama panchayat; Rs.1.58 crore in pudur; and Rs.1.04 crore in Sholayur grama panchayat.

10,000 families benefit

Block Programme Officer P.V. Radhakrishnan said that Rs.10 crore would be spent on wages to provide employment to over 10,000 families in Attappady Block this financial year.

The amount last year was Rs.6.25 crore and 7,976 families were given jobs.

The scheme was intended at bringing tribal land under cultivation.

Workers employed in agriculture works were also tribal people. The administrative cost of the project was only 3.5 per cent, the lowest in any such government projects, Mr. Radhakrishnan said.
