Row over bus station complex

Former civic chief says funds diversion had taken place during CPI(M) regime

July 21, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 08:56 am IST - PATHANAMTHITTA:

The Local Self-Government Department would conduct a detailed probe into the alleged irregularities in the construction of the municipal bus station complex and yard here, according to Veena George, MLA.

In a statement issued here on Wednesday, Ms George said this was announced by the Local Administration Minister K.T. Jaleel while replying to her submission in the Assembly.

In her submission, the MLA had sought a department-level inquiry into the alleged unscientific construction of the municipal bus stand as well as the factors leading to its present sad state of affairs.

She alleged that the roof of the new bus station complex was leaking and cracks have developed on the plastering of walls.

The Minister has promised to sanction fund for renovation of the bus station complex, once the inquiry report was submitted, she said.

Welcomes probe

Meanwhile, the former municipal chairperson, Ajeeba M. Sabhib, has retorted that the detailed probe was a welcome move as it would land only the CPI(M) in trouble.

Talking to reporters, Ms Sahib said the MLA’s accusing finger would ultimately turn against her own party leaders.

She said the decision to construct a new bus stand was taken by the first municipal council and the work on it began in 2000.

The construction of the yard had taken place during the council chaired by Zakir Hussein of the CPI(M).

The diversion of funds had taken place by the municipal council led by the CPI(M), Ms Sahib alleged.
