A three-day visit of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to study various issues of tribespeople, especially the issues of the unwed tribal mothers , in the district began on Monday.
The team led by Justice Cyriac Joseph reviewed various steps adopted by the district administration for the progress of the marginalised section of the society and protection of their rights at a meeting of the senior officials of various departments in the district.
The panel asked the number of unwed tribal mothers in each panchayats in the district.
Officials told the commission that there were 311 unwed tribal mothers in the district and 71 among them had been getting a monthly pension of Rs.1,000 each under the ‘Snehasprsam’ project of the government.
Justice Cyriac Joseph directed the officials to submit a detailed report on the reason for the denial of pension to others. It also collected evidence from police officials on the sexual exploitation of tribal women.
The team also visited the Model Residential School for tribal children at Kaniyampetta and Padinhare tribal hamlet in Panamaram grama panchayat.
It will hold a meeting of the senior officials of the Scheduled Tribe Department at the collectorate conference hall here at 10 a.m. on Tuesday to assess the progress of the tribal welfare projects in the district. The visit will conclude on Wednesday.
