The government has decided to raise the retirement age of doctors and medical college teachers.

The Cabinet meeting on Wednesday approved a proposal submitted by the LDF to raise the retirement age of doctors under the Directorate of Health Services from 56 to 60 while that of teachers under the Directorate of Medical Education would be increased from 60 to 62.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told the media at a post-Cabinet meeting that the decision was triggered by the shortage of experienced doctors, both in the health services and in medical colleges. He said the retirement age of doctors in most other States was higher than in Kerala.
