Kerala State Coastal Area Development Corporation Limited (KSCADC), a State government company engaged in integration of development activities of the coastal area, is planning to conduct topographical survey and aerial mapping. The data from the study will be utilised for infrastructure projects, its Managing Director K. Ambadi told The Hindu.

The KSCADC has begun the process to empanel experienced agencies in possession of modern technology to undertake works such as aerial mapping using unmanned aircraft, 3D laser scanning, and location of underground utilities. The project will be awarded to competent entities once the empanelment is completed. The project will be first of its kind in the State, he said.

Kerala doesn’t have data on underground utilities. Certain departments had sought the help of KSCADC to get information on underground utilities. The administration in Kozhikode was in search of such a data for taking up projects along Canolly canal there. A comprehensive resource mapping of Kerala could be of immense help in building future infrastructure. The data would be highly useful in land development and harbour engineering projects. Aerial mapping technology is employed in the construction of oil rigs and various other projects. It is understood that States such as Karnataka have initiated studies to collect data of underground utilities.
