The work to replace the butterfly valve of the penstock carrying water to the Moozhiyar power house of the 340 mw Sabarigiri hydropower project was over on Saturday and the repair work was nearing completion, according to official sources.

The Kerala State Electricity Board shut down the Moozhiyar power house on May 22 for replacing the valve and other repairs.

The board decided to replace the butterfly valve of the penstock-II carrying water to generators III and IV following detection of heavy leak two years ago.

Talking to The Hindu , Mohammed Ali Rawther, KSEB member, said the butterfly valve had been replaced and the entire repair work would be completed by June 22.

He said the KSEB would start filling the penstock with water on June 23, which would be completed in three days. Considering the pace of the repair work at Moozhiyar, the power generation at Sabarigiri was likely to resume by June 26.

Meanwhile, the storage position at the Kakki-Anathode twin reservoirs of the Sabarigiri project was only seven per cent of the total storage as on Tuesday.

Mr. Rawther said the rainfall at the catchment areas of the Sabarigiri project was very low leading to poor inflow into the reservoirs, compared to the previous year.
