Rema flays political opportunism of VS

March 24, 2014 02:26 am | Updated November 16, 2021 07:29 pm IST - KOLLAM:

Leader of the Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) K.K. Rema has said she is hopeful that the Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanadan will sooner or later correct his present altered stand in connection with the murder of her husband T.P. Chandrasekharan.

Ms. Rema said this while addressing a meet-the-press programme organised by the Kollam Press Club here on Sunday when she arrived to inaugurate the election convention of the independent Left Unity Front candidate K. Bhaskaran who is contesting from the Kollam constituency with RMP support.

She alleged that Mr. Achuthanandan’s sudden change from his stand over the TP murder case reflects politics of opportunism and it does not suit a communist leader of his calibre.

“He appears to have fallen prey to the machinations of the CPI(M) leadership to use him for the Lok Sabha elections,” she said.

She said that the CPI(M) faces a situation in which the party feels that it might lose its national party status. To escape it the party has to earn the maximum possible Lok Sabha seats from Kerala. “The CPI(M) is resorting to various game plans for the purpose and Mr. Achuthanandan has fallen prey to it,” she said.

The volte-face of Mr. Achuthanadan on the TP murder case has eroded his image among the people, Ms. Rema said. She said that the Congress has no role behind the growth of the RMP. Moreover, her party was not formed with the intention of joining any political front.

The RMP does not have any agenda to help the UDF and neither has the party ever expected Mr. Achuthanandan to join it. But it is a fact that the RMP had the backing of Mr. Achuthanandan,” she said.

Through the change of stand on the TP murder case Mr. Achuthanandan can escape being made the scapegoat for the humiliating defeat which is looming large over the CPI(M) in the April 10 Lok Sabha elections, she said.

Ms. Rema said that Mr. Achuthanandan is a good communist and hence he will not be able to tolerate the present CPI(M) leadership for long. She said her husband had never approached Chief Minister Oommen Chandy or any other authority seeking protection on the basis of threats to his life. Recent statements by Mr. Achuthanandan to the contrary were baseless.
