There appears to be no let up in the spat at Mahatma Gandhi University as Vice-Chancellor A.V. George said an explanation would be sought from M.R. Unni, the Registrar under suspension who was ‘reinstated into service as per the syndicate decision of August 3’, for his “unauthorised absence”.
The Vice-Chancellor was speaking to media persons in the wake of the Supreme Court directive to reinstate the Registrar on Friday.
Court directive
Dr. George said Mr. Unni was reinstated on the basis of an earlier court directive. He was expected to join duty after his compulsory leave on September 3.
“However, Mr. Unni has neither joined duty nor has he provided any explanation for his absence so far,” the Vice-Chancellor said.
According to him, the University had notified Mr. Unni regarding his reinstatement via messenger and a registered post.
“The University will seek explanation from Mr. Unni for his unauthorised absence from duty,” Dr. George said.
Inquiry pending
Dr. George said the University, after deciding in favour of his reinstatement, had asked him to go on leave as the inquiry by the Syndicate sub committee was still pending.
To another question, he said the inquiry had been completed.
Referring to the controversy over the Vivekandnda Chair award, Dr. George said the decision was taken invoking the powers of the Vice-Chancellor provided under Chapter 3 Sec. 10 (17) of the University Act of 1985. So far there had been no opposition from any quarter but the present controversies were precipitated by certain quarters on issues which were of no merit, Dr. George said.
No complications
According to him, the University did not want to complicate the issue and as such it has been directed not to go ahead with the programmes which have been scheduled.
A final decision on the matter would be taken at the meeting of the Syndicate scheduled for September 30, he said.
Pandemonium
Meanwhile, a meeting of the Senate held here on Friday ended in pandemonium as the Congress and KSU members mounted an attack on the Vice Chancellor for his alleged anti- UDF stance.
This was countered by SFI students and Left members of the senate who called for an investigation into the actions of one of the members who had supported the creation of new posts in the university, but later went to the court against it.
As the pandemonium broke out, Dr. George dispersed the meeting after agreeing for an inquiry into the matter.
