Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala has said that UDF constituents must stop trying to weaken the coalition.
At a convention organised by the District Congress Committee here on Saturday, Mr. Chennithala said that while the UDF government was making all efforts to fulfil the promise of good governance given to the people, controversies were being raked up to thwart those efforts.
“Congress is prepared to make sacrifices but the party alone cannot be expected to do that always. UDF cannot accept the allies’ tendency of making excessive claims,” Mr. Chennithala said. He admitted that recent controversies had tarnished the image of the UDF. It was better to admit those mistakes, correct them, and move forward.
Mr. Chennithala said it was a matter of pride that unlike in the past, the Congress was not to be blamed for the troubles in the front this time. He attributed this to the perfect sync in which the Congress legislative party leader Oommen Chandy and he had worked over the last eight years. “Since Congress is a democratic party, there can be different opinions. But those issues are solved through discussions,” he said.
Mr. Chennithala said that the Congress treated all the constituents of UDF with equal respect irrespective of their number of MLAs. Without naming the party, he said that an ally had constantly criticised UDF after staying away from successive meetings of the front. Congress, Mr. Chennithala said, was ready to resolve problems of UDF allies through discussion.
