Menace of plastic waste

The plastic waste menace is alarmingly high, mainly along the pocket roads of Kannur.

They are also found on a large scale on the sides of the bypass road between Chala and Thazechovva and the highway between Valapttanam and Puthiaytheru.

The putrid smell emanating from the discarded plastic carry bags containing food and slaughter house waste is intolerable.

Besides, plastic bottles and carry bags in large quantities are being dumped into river that ultimately finds its way into the sea, posing a threat to the marine ecology.

Another disquieting factor is burning bundles of plastics in the open in thickly populated residential complexes, forcing the residents to inhale toxic fumes.

The government should take efforts to ban disposable plastic containers.
