A note of appreciation

Congratulations to The Hindu for completing 20 years in Thiruvananthapuram. The newspaper maintains the highest standards of journalism and stands first in reporting events at the national and international levels. The fact that it stands first in circulation shows that the paper has an important role in the day-to-day lives of the people of Kerala. The reports are highly dependable and once a news item appears in The Hindu, there is no need for subsequent verification. This is wishing the newspaper many more years of eventful existence. Let us hope that the paper does not deviate from its founding principles.

Water woes

Drinking water scarcity is affecting the people of the city. The place had ample water resources. The abuse of the resources should stop immediately. Leaking taps and broken pipelines should be fixed. Water pilferage should end. The Kerala Water Authority is enthusiastic in collecting water charges from domestic consumers. Charges are not meticulously collected from large commercial consumers and defaulters are seldom fined. Justice and social responsibility have no place in this capital city.

Tough questions

The recently held Mathematics examinations of the SSLC and Plus Two classes were in the news because the questions were very tough. Teachers, students, and parents had aired their concerns in this regard.

There is a very specific syllabus and there is no scope for any deviation.

Even teachers could not answer certain question asked in the said examinations. Those who set question papers are apparently not aware of the practicalities, including the time allotted for the examination. There is a definite lack of awareness regarding the syllabus and the pattern or model in which the questions should be set. The questions should test the level of understanding of students. It should not be a place to display the scholastics of those who set the question paper.

Post more doctors

Three dispensaries under the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) function in the city, at Sasthamangalam, Kesavadasapuram, and Vanchiyoor.

I am a retired Central government officer and I use the Sasthamangalam dispensary.

Over 200 patients turn up everyday at the facility. Usually, there is only one doctor on duty. The doctor should treat patients and attend to administrative matters. The duty time of doctors is five hours in the forenoon and 90 minutes in the afternoon. Most of the patients are senior citizens. One can imagine the work stress of the doctors on duty, not to mention the pain and agony of patients waiting for their turn.

Patients queue up as early as 6 a.m. to get a priority token, the issue of which starts only at 8 a.m. The condition is no different in other dispensaries. The situation will improve only if more doctors are appointed.

Sound pollution

The District Collector had taken proactive steps to curb sound pollution. However, some places of worship continue to flout all the norms. I recently noticed such violations at Nanthancode and Vanchiyoor. People hesitate to complain because the clout of the violators is enormous. The authorities must crack down on those who disturb the peace of citizens. The equipment they use should be seized. The authorities should also contemplate a blanket ban on loudspeakers.
