The State government has approved the sale of essential commodities and other articles through ration shops, All India Ration Dealers' Association general secretary Babychen Mukkadan has said. At a press meet here on Saturday, Mr. Mukkadan said the decision was taken at a meeting held in Thiruvananthapuram recently between the Food and Civil Supplies Secretary and representatives of various organisations. Under the scheme, ration dealers will be permitted to purchase products from the Public Distribution System (PDS) and wholesale dealers and sell them through ration shops within the State. These include 13 essential commodities, vegetables, Milma and Kudumbasree products. However, rice, wheat, sugar and kerosene have been exempted from this scheme as they are being distributed through the PDS.

Mr. Mukkadan said the scheme was a collaboration between the Union and the State governments.
