Rainy days likely the week ahead

December 01, 2010 07:47 pm | Updated 07:47 pm IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The northeast monsoon, which has presented Kerala 70 per cent more rainfall than usual as of last week, is set to continue its copious trend during the week ahead, according to the numerical weather prediction models of India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Steady widespread drizzle with drenching downpour in isolated places characterised the weather in the State on Wednesday. An upper air cyclonic circulation was persisting over southeast Arabian Sea in the lower levels of the atmosphere during the day. A slow easterly wave of the monsoon system was continuing to sweep the south peninsula. The cloud imagery in the afternoon showed convective clouds over parts of south Arabian Sea and over the whole of the State.

In its bulletin for the day, the IMD forecast widespread rain or thundershowers over Kerala during the next three days. The bulletin also warned of heavy rainfall in isolated places in the State during the next two days. Giving the weather outlook for the period till Monday morning (December 6), the IMD said the south peninsula (which includes Kerala) would receive fairly widespread rainfall. The numerical weather prediction models indicated that south and central Kerala could receive more rainfall than north Kerala during this period.
