Incessant rainfall in the hill district of Pathanamthitta over the past 24 hours and heavy winds on Saturday evening wreaked havoc in many parts of the district.

Revenue department sources told The Hindu that the fierce wind had damaged many houses, besides destroying crops.

As many as 55 houses were damaged, eight of them fully, in the heavy wind that had lashed the Kozhencherry, Enadimangalam, Adoor, Pallickal, Kuttoor, Eraviperoor, on Saturday evening.

Several standing trees were uprooted in the wind, destroying crops and inflicting heavy loss on the farming community.

Power supply was disrupted for more than 17 hours in many parts of the district with the uprooting of several electric posts in the affected area. Vehicular traffic was also disrupted for about an hour on various roads leading to Pampa and on the MC Road on Sunday.

Meanwhile, a statement issued by the Pampa Irrigation Project authorities here on Sunday said that the small dam at Maniyar near Chittar was likely to be opened any time on Sunday, if the heavy inflow continued from its catchment areas.
