Heavy rain that lashed various parts of the district has caused heavy damage to property and standing crops.
Low-lying areas are under water with home appliances getting damaged at some places as flood water entered houses. People complained that lack of preparedness by the authorities had made the situation worse.
Clogged storm water drains were causing flooding in many areas in the city. Shakthan Nagar, Thikkumarakudam, Punkunnam, Sankaramkulangara and Udhayanagar are under water.
More than 20 houses were damaged at various parts of the district such as Pulloot, Methala, Kara, Kunnamkulam and Kulimuttom. Rain, accompanied by lightning and thunder, has created havoc in many areas.
Heavy wind uprooted many trees, disrupting vehicle traffic. Power connection was snapped in many areas. The fire and rescue force had a tough time removing the uprooted trees and broken electricity poles.
Sea erosion has been reported from the coastal area of the district.
Chavakkad, Kodungallur, Chettuva, Andathode, Kumarampadi, Periyambalam, Kadappuram and Thotappu are the most affected areas. More than 200 houses between Thottappu light house and Chettuva are facing sea erosion. Sand and water washed into many houses. Sea walls have been damaged in many places. Many coconut trees too have been uprooted.
Meanwhile, people from rain-affected areas of Kodungallur taluk staged a sit-in protest in front of the taluk office.
They demanded protection of their property and lives. Construction of sea walls and emergency relief for rain-affected areas are their main demands.
Meanwhile, the trawling ban will be imposed from June 14 night.
