The sky lit up in a riot of colours during the ‘Sample Vedikkettu’ held in connection with the Thrissur Pooram at Thekkinkadu maidan.

Pooram lovers were apprehensive about the firework as heavy rain lashed the city on Sunday. The show was cancelled last year due to heavy rain. Hundreds of supporters witnessed the spectacular treat. Swaraj Round and nearby lanes were packed.

Thiruvambadi kicked off the show by 7 p.m. Pyrotechnician Mundathikode Satheesh led the fireworks of Thiruvambadi Devaswom. He has been leading the Thiruvambadi team for the last three years. However, it was first time for Stebin Stephan, who led the fireworks for Paramekkavu. Both of them came out with many innovative patterns.

When Thiruvambadi tried out ‘special amittu’, Paramekkavu followed the traditional style of fireworks. The spectacular show continued for almost an hour.

Police and security forces had a tough time, as the crowd tried to move closer to the pooram ground. The fireworks were arranged in three stages. Initially, it was the less vigorous items like malapadakkam and gundu and later amittu. The vigorous dynamite is used in the last part of the show. Meanwhile, the street vendors have started finding a spot to sell their wares till Thursday.
