Students of a hotel management institute stake their claim to the longest puttu — at 18.2 feet.

Sri Lanka has always claimed credit for coming up with puttu, the much favoured breakfast dish of Keralites. Now, a group of hotel management students here has staked claim for making the longest of its kind.

Eleven final year students of the Oriental School of Hotel Management (OSHM) at Lakkidi in Wayanad district used a 20-ft special mould of aluminium on Monday to prepare the dish in their attempt to find a mention in the Guinness World Records. They took 1.15 hours to cook the 18.2-ft long puttu with a diameter of four inches. “Our senior students had got into the Limca Book of Wold Records by making a 10-ft puttu, 1,001 oothappams with different toppings, 1,001 flavours of tea etc.,” says B. Akhil, the team leader. “Some Sri Lankans then broke our seniors’ record by making a 16.66-ft puttu. We wanted to regain our record,” say M. Shyama and Kavya Varghese, group members. The programme was held on the OSHM campus as part of promoting safe eating habits among youth. They used 20 kg of ground flour, 4 kg grated coconut, 15 litres of water and salt to taste. The puttu weighed 31.87 kg.

As a part of the programme five food stalls serving 50 varieties of puttu — made of fish, chicken, mussels, chicken, cornflakes, cardamom, and coffee, among others — were set up by the students.
