The stalled waste disposal of the Kannur municipality resumed on Thursday after the police arrested the local residents protesting against the municipality's dump at Chelora.
The municipality's garbage disposal that had been disrupted since December 26 following protests by the local residents demanding closure of the dump resumed on Thursday morning. Four truck loads of garbage were brought to the landfill at the Chelora panchayat in the morning. Large numbers of police personnel were deployed in the area in view of the agitation near the entrance to the dump.
The police personnel removed the shamiana erected by the protesting residents and arrested nearly 50 residents who included 20 women. The police said that the protestors were arrested when they blocked the entry of the vehicles.
Three women who showed signs of physical exhaustion when they were arrested and removed have been admitted to hospital here, the police said.
The resumption of the waste disposal operation of the municipality followed the decision of the all-party meeting convened by Rural Development Minister K.C. Joseph here the other day to restore the stalled garbage removal with police protection. All the mainstream political party leaders here stood united in demanding police protection for the waste disposal in the Chelora and Pettippalam dumps of the Kannur and Thalassery municipalities respectively.
