Protest against night traffic ban

March 29, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:55 am IST - KALPETTA:

Hundreds of people took out a protest march and staged a demonstration at Sulthan Bathery on Saturday in protest against the ban on night traffic on roads passing through the wildlife reserves in Karnataka.

The protest was organised under the aegis of the Karnataka- Tamil Nadu- Kerala Night Travelling Protection Committee to sensitise the governments and the public on the gravity of the issue.

Members of various farmer, religious, and trade organisations in Wayanad and Gundlepet in Karnataka and Gudallur in the Nilgiris participated in the protest.

T.M. Rasheed, convener of the committee, told The Hindu that the Karnataka High Court imposed the night traffic ban on the Mysore-Kozhikode National Highway 212 and the Ooty-Mysore National Highway 67 nearly six years ago. It had adversely affected all sections of people, especially farmers and students, in the region.

He said the successive governments had failed to adopt measures to lift the ban.
