: A sustained project to end stray dog menace in the district was launched by the district unit of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) on Friday. The programme was formally inaugurated by G.S. Jayalal, MLA, at the Kalluvathukkal grama panchayat.

B. Aravind, technical expert of the SPCA who is heading the programme, said as per data collected by the SPCA, there were over 50,000 stray dogs in the district. Through the project christened ‘Suraksha’, the SPCA intends sterilising as many dogs as possible. After the sterilisation process, anti-rabies vaccine would be administered.

On the first day, 18 stray dogs were sterilised. The operation will continue through next week at Kalluvathukkal. Dr. Aravind said the project would be implemented next at Nedumpana.

Veterinary surgeons Ajit T. and Sajay Kumar assisted Dr. Aravind in the sterilisation operation.
