The District Collector has ordered a prohibition on liquor in the city during Thrissur Pooram festival. The Bevco outlets and beer and wine parlours in the corporation limit will remain closed from April 29 to April 30 afternoon.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, the Collector said elephants will be paraded in the pooram according to the guidelines of the Animal Welfare Board.

The Sub Collector will monitor the conduct of events including Elanjithara Melam and Kudamattom in which thousands of people will participate.

People will not be allowed to stand on the dilapidated building in the Swaraj Round and MO Road to watch pooram events, said ACP Siva Vikram.

A 3,000-strong police force will be deployed in the city, besides over 1,000 police officers in plainclothes. Surveillance cameras will be installed at various parts of the city.

A police control room will be opened at Thekke Gopura Nada. Fire and Rescue Services, Excise and Forest personnel will be there to help the police force.

The police have started preventive arrests of habitual culprits to ensure security.

Steps will be taken to ensure sufficient supply of drinking water during pooram days, the authorities said.

There were reports that fake currencies of 50 and 100 denominations are circulating in the city.

According to the police, the fake notes have been circuiting mainly through migrant labourers.

The traffic police have imposed regulations for vehicles ahead of the pooram.

The kodiyettam ceremony of Paramekkavu and Thiruvambadi devaswoms were held on Thursday.
