The Mattannur municipal council has nearly eight more months to complete its tenure before the new council takes charge after the municipal election scheduled to be held in September. But efforts are now under way for starting the process of carrying out delimitation of wards ahead of the polls.
The election to the Mattannur municipal council was last held in September 5, 2007. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) secured huge majority in the 31-member municipal council in the last election.
Arrangements are now on for starting pre-election preparation beginning with delimitation of the wards in the municipality. The number of wards has now been increased from the existing 31 to 34. The Municipal secretary has been directed by the State Delimitation Commission to prepare a preliminary report redrawing the boundaries of the wards to incorporate three new wards sanctioned to the municipality.
As per the instruction the District Collector should be submitted the draft delimitation report on January 25. The Collector will then submit the delimitation proposal after examining the draft report on January 28. The commission will publish the draft proposals on January 31 and receive complaints and suggestions on the report till February 12. The suggestions and complaints on the report would be examined and the final delimitation report will be published on February 25, according to an official press release.
A review meeting on delimitation of the wards in the Mattannur municipality was held at the Collectorate a few days ago. Commission Chairman and State Election Commissioner K. Sasidharan, Panchayat Additional Director J. Sadanandan and Additional District Magistrate in charge of the Collector N.T. Mathew were among those present at the meeting in which representatives of political parties attended.
The press release said that the total population of the Mattannur municipality would be divided by the total number of wards sanctioned to figure out the population of each ward.
