Probe into alleged phone tapping

Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan on Thursday asked Inspector General of Police (Ernakulam range) K. Padmakumar to inquire into the allegation that the phone of Nair Service Society (NSS) general secretary G. Sukumaran Nair had been tapped.

The NSS general secretary himself had complained that his phone was being tapped by the Intelligence wing of the police. He had also said that he had complained to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy about it and brought the matter to the notice of the Home Minister. However, no action had been taken.

Soon after Mr. Sukumaran Nair went public with the allegation on Thursday, Mr. Radhakrishnan ordered the inquiry.

The allegation assumes significance against the background of the controversy over the demand to induct Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala into the State Cabinet as Home Minister.
