Prasobh remanded in police custody

Ambalappuzha Judicial First Class Magistrate V. Udayakumar on Monday remanded Prasobh Sugathan, second officer of m.v. Prabhu Daya which allegedly rammed a fishing boat off the Alappuzha coast on March 1 killing five fishermen, in police custody till 5 p.m. on March 24.

The court was acting on an application moved by the Ambalappuzha police on Friday seeking custody of Prasobh.

The Keralite officer, first accused in a case registered by the Ambalappuzha police on the mid-sea collision, has been in the Alappuzha sub-jail on remand till March 29.

Another case has been registered by the police on a complaint filed by Sugathan, father of Prasobh, alleging that his son was thrown off the ship after the collision. The police already have in their custody Gordon Charles Pereira, captain of the ship and third accused, till March 23 and Mayur Veerendra Kumar, seaman and second accused, till March 20. Sources said the police are questioning all the three together in the two cases.
