As per the 2011 Census, the population in the district rose to 28,10,892 against 26,17,072 in the 2001 Census.
There is an increase of 7.39 per cent in the population growth rate in the district from 2001 to 2011 as against the State's growth rate of 4.86 per cent during the period.
The sex ratio in the district stood at 1,000 men against 1,067 women, with 13,60,067 men and 14,50,825 women in the district.
The population of children below the age group of six stood at 2,88,366. Of this, 1,46,947 are male, and 1,41,419 female.
The literacy rate among men in the district stood at 88.49 per cent and 84.99 per cent among women.
