Poor quality of drinking water rocks Council meet

Many areas being supplied muddy water; cleaning in Peechi blamed

May 23, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:56 am IST - Thrissur:

The disruption in drinking water supply in many areas of the city led to heated argument in the Corporation council meeting on Friday.

The councillors alleged that the water supplied in many areas was red in colour. One councillor even brought the muddy water in a bottle to the council meeting.

The on-going cleaning work at the drinking water plant at Peechi was causing the decolouration of the water, Mayor Rajan Pallan told the council.

“The cleaning work of the six filters in the plant is going on. The work will be completed in a week. We have brought the issue to the attention of the water authority. The problem will be rectified in a week’s time,” he said.

Stringent action will be taken against those who eat into public fund, the Mayor said, while responding to the discussion on performance audit report, which showed irregularities in the projects under taken by the Public Works Department.

“Inquiry will be held into the allegation of irregularities. An expert team has been formed to inquire into the alleged misappropriation in the work of the contractor K.M. Ashiq. He has already been blacklisted. If the report confirms the irregularities, the case will be handed over to vigilance,” the Mayor said.

The steering committee meeting held on May 19 had already given warning against the irregularities in the work of engineering department, he added.

Permission to install new mobile towers henceforth will be given only after getting permission of the council.

Mayor told the council that the Punkunnam junction development was expected to complete in two weeks. “Funds will not be a problem for development of Poothole overbridge. A meeting will be held at Collector’s chamber on May 30 in connection with development of Divanji Corner and M.G. Road.

Opposition leader P.A. Purushothaman criticised the corporation for unavailability of sanitation fund for this year.

The civic body failed to get the fund as it didn’t file accounts of the previous year. He asked why it failed to submit the accounts.

The council meeting also raised the issue of water logging in the low-laying areas in the city. The water canals should be cleaned before the monsoon, it noted.
