In a bizarre incident, Mavelikara police on Wednesday morning rescued a 58-year-old woman who was being locked up in a room in her house for months together.

Based on a tip-off to Janamaithri police, a police team headed by Mavelikara CI, Sivasuthan Pillai and SI, Jose Mathew entered the house, Athakottumadathil belonging to Vishnu Namboothiri in Mattam in Mavelikara and found Mr. Namboothiri’s wife in a pool of excreta. There was nobody else in the house. The woman identified as Subhadra Antharjanam reportedly told the police that she was being locked up in the room for the last two years.

Mavelikara SI, Jose Mathew told The Hindu that the woman was exhausted and in a semi-conscious state. “The husband was telling things in an incoherent way. Only after talking to her when she is fully recovered, we could verify what had happened,” Mr. Mathew said.

The house of about 3000 sq ft inside a vast two and a half acres reportedly had only the woman, her husband and their son. Her husband and the son were reportedly works as priests in temples.
