Motor Vehicle Department and the Police would jointly launch a serious initiative to enforce traffic rules in the district in the backdrop of the increasing instances of road accidents in the district, said Health Minister, Adoor Prakash.
Talking to reporters here on Monday, the Minister said the decision was taken at a meeting of K. Sivadasan Nair, MLA; Babu George, District Panchayat president; A. Sureshkumar, municipal chairman; district authorities, senior officials attached to Motor Vehicles Department and the Police, trade union leaders and leaders of various private bus operators’ associations, held at the Collectorate in the afternoon.
Mr Prakash said a major road mishap a Koodal near Konni had claimed five lives a month ago and another accident held at Vadasserikkara on Saturday had claimed three lives. Many of the road accidents were said to have been caused by human error and the earnest efforts would be made to avert such accidents, atleast, in future, he added.
The Minister said necessary steps would be taken to make the district an accident-free zone in the near future itself. He said no major road accident was reported from the district during the previous Mandalam-Makaravilakku pilgrim season and the credit goes to the district administration, the police and the MVD for the same.
Mr Prakash said the meeting has decided to cancel the driving licence of the erring drivers who were caught thrice for driving the vehicle after consuming alcohol or using mobile phones while driving.
He said the phone numbers of the police and MVD official concerned would be exhibited on the windowpanes of the private buses for the passengers to directly complain in case such violations by the driver came to their notice.
