Police acting in a partisan manner in Kannur: Cong.

July 24, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 06:00 am IST - KANNUR:

Alleging that the police in the district are not acting against perpetrators of violence, the Congress leadership here has accused the police of being partisan, registering ‘fabricated cases against Congress workers and not arresting Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] workers involved in cases of violence.’

District Congress Committee president K. Surendran and Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) general secretary Satheeshan Pacheni alleged at a press conference here on Saturday that no one was arrested in connection with the torching of the cars of two college teachers, who are members of a pro-Congress teachers’ association, and the destruction of a car of a Congress functionary at Kankol-Alapadamba weeks ago.

No arrests were made in connection with the attacks on four Congress offices in the Pinarayi panchayat and nearby areas, they said, accusing the district police of acting in a partisan way in around 60 such cases.

The Congress leadership here had formally lodged a complaint in this regard with the District Police Chief Sanjay Kumar Gurudin, Mr. Surendran and Mr. Pacheni said.

The accused in attacks on Kerala Students’ Union (KSU) workers at Payyannur and Iritty were yet to be arrested. At Payyannur, a KSU worker was attacked by Students Federation India (SFI) activists, they said. They alleged that KSU workers were being targeted by SFI workers on college campuses in the district.

KSU district office-bearer Sudeep James was present at the press meet.
