The final electoral roll for the by-election in the Kannur Assembly constituency has a total of 9,357 new voters including 7,987 enrolled from new applications.
The final voters list for the by-election here was finalised on Wednesday, amid controversy over the new additions as the United Democratic Front (UDF) had already appealed to the Election Commission to intervene to ensure that the election was held as per a genuine electoral roll. The UDF had alleged that the Communist Party of India (Marxist) misused government machinery to include a large number of new voters on the basis of residency certificates issued by the panchayat secretary or village officer concerned.
Kannur Tahsildar V. Gopinath, also the electoral roll officer for the constituency, said the election office had received a total of 12,631 applications for enrollment in the electoral roll. The number of applied new voters enrolled in the roll is 7,987. Out of the total 539 applications for transfer of voters under Form 8(A), 1,370 voters were included in the final list, he said.
Mr. Gopinath also disclosed that his office had received 8,549 applications for deletion from the list. As many as 6,386 names were deleted from the draft voters’ list in the Kannur Assembly segment used in the last Lok Sabha election. The deletions included 5,043 names removed on the basis of complaints, 531 applied for transfer to other constituency and 804 deleted suo motu.
The total increase of voters in the list compared to the electoral roll in the Lok Sabha election was 2,971. The final list has 1,33,326 voters including 60,367 men and 72,959 women. The total number of voters in the Kannur Assembly segment in the Lok Sabha election is 1,30,355.
