Congress leader K. Karunakaran PIllai took over as the district chairman of the United Democratic Front (UDF) from Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) general secretary Sooranad Rajashekharan at a function held at the DCC office here on Thursday. District leaders of all the UDF constituents were present.

Mr. Pillai, a founder leader of the NGO Association, said his thrust would be to maintain unity among the constituents.

He said the UDF had a strong base in the district. But bickering between constituents had led to poor performance in elections.

He said that better coordination between the constituents would overcome this problem for which he said he would strive.

With unity at the desired levels, the UDF would become a force to reckon with in the district, Mr. Pillai said.

The immediate focus was on the approaching Lok Sabha and local body elections. The UDF had performed well in the district in the last Lok Sabha elections and efforts would be taken to improve that performance in the coming election too.

Mr. Pillai was confident that the UDF would be able to stage a comeback in the coming local body elections.
