Social activist Daya Bai has said the people themselves are to blame for the extreme heat conditions experienced in the State.

“Greed-driven people destroyed forests and encroached upon it, axed trees, and replaced paddy fields with concrete complexes. Nature had been cruelly exploited,” she said.

Ms Daya Bai was inaugurating the valedictory function of “Manjadikunnu”, a weeklong summer camp for school students at the Pattathanam SNDP Upper Primary School here on Tuesday.

The organisers of the programme created a typical village on the campus and provided an opportunity for the city-based students to experience life in a village.

More programmes

She called upon educational institutions to organise nature-protection programmes such as “Manjadikunnu” to inculcate love of nature among the younger generation.

“I travelled a long distance to come and meet all of you as the programme promotes love of nature among students,” she told them.

Daya Bai, born Mercy Mathew, a native of Pala, works in Chhindwara district in Madhya Pradesh for the uplift of the tribal population.

She interacted with the students and had meals with them.
