The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has called off the hartal it had called on Wednesday.

The PDP, which had called the hartal to protest against the Karnataka NIA Court’s decision not to permit party chairman Abdul Nasir Maudany to attend his son’s wedding on August 9, called it off on the advice of Mr. Maudany’s lawyers in the Supreme Court. The lawyers had told the PDP supremo that the Karnataka government might cite the hartal as reason enough for denying permission to him to visit his home State. Following the advice, the PDP leader issued a public appeal to his followers not to go ahead with the hartal plan.

The Karnataka NIA Court had relaxed Mr. Maudany’s bail conditions on Monday permitting him to visit his ailing mother and be with her from August 1 to 6. However, the court did not accept his plea for permission to attend his son’s wedding.
