Patient’s death: case registered against hospital

The police have registered a case against a private hospital here following the death of a patient before he was scheduled to have undergone a keyhole surgery for removing kidney stone.

The case was registered after A.V. Harishchandran, 59, an employee of the Customs and Central Excise office at Kanhangad, was found dead around 9.15 p.m. on Friday in the observation room as he was taken to the operation theatre to perform the surgery.

Mr. Harishchandran, a resident of Ayampara, near Periye, here was admitted to the KIMS Hospital here on Thursday to undergo a surgery for removing kidney stone.

The surgery was scheduled at 8 p.m. and accordingly the patient was shifted to the observation room ahead of the arrival of the surgeon from Mangalore. As Mr. Harishchandran showed signs of uneasiness, the hospital staff informed the former’s relative to visit him inside the observation room where he was reported to have found lying unconscious.

The hospital authorities informed the death of the patient around 9.15 p.m., minutes before the surgeon reached the hospital.

Relatives’ complaint

The relatives of Mr. Harishchandran lodged a complaint with the Town Police station here expressing suspicion over the death of the man, who was about to retire from service next year.

The body of Mr. Harishchandran was shifted to the Pariyaram Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination, the police said.

A case under provision of Cr.PC 174 (unnatural death) was registered in connection with the death, they said adding that a detailed report would be ready only by Sunday.
